Seeing as yet another new year is well underway, it brings up treasured memories of my study abroad expirence in Rome, Italy. It has been three years and my friends I still can not stop talking about the amazing four months we spent in the legendary city. While intially I had hoped to go to London, I fell head over heels in love Rome, the pasta, the rich history and the gelato. I was swept away by the wonder of my time there and felt so lucky I was able to spend the semester in such an amazing place.
My project for the semester was to create a mini collection, one look consisting of a coat and a second one to compliment it. The inspiration for my collection was drawn from my Italian surroundings and the Renaissance atmosphere of the building that housed my classrooms. Several of my ideas actually came from a series of quick sketches I did in the big meeting room of our school that was decorated in stunning frescos and beautiful curtains. Studying abroad felt very romantic to me, like a dream that came to life, which helped me decide on fabrics. Some many rich textiles and patterns were all around me, so I picked a brocade like pattern, delicate geometric patterns and my always favorite, tulle!
Other cities that had an influence on my collection were Florence, where I found the fabric for my coat and the ultimate Renaissance city, Venice; a city that defines romance and mystery to me, and Verona; one I wished I visited but couldn’t help but imagine the iconic story of Romeo and Juliet happening on every balcony in Roma.
The historic architecture and warm colors of the buildings in Rome also provided some inspiration for the looks. With so many feminine details and romantic nods, this helped bring a bit of cool vibe to the collection, something a bit quirky and looks I wish I had with me for the semester.
Thanks for reading and keep traveling!
