A big area of inspiration for me has always been art and throughout my life, I have always been encouraged to explore different of areas of art. Even after I fell in love with fashion design, I still like to dabble in new ways to be creative. As I have mentioned is some of my other posts, I really enjoy photography. I first took a class in high school, taking photos with my mom's camera she used in her own high school photography class. In college, I had the chance to take another class and I was so excited to get back behind the camera.
I took Black and White Photography, so I used a 35 mm film camera, which was (and is) so much fun. It takes you back in time in a way and being the history nerd I am, I absolutely love that. In an age of smartphones and selfies, the process of taking the photographs, developing the film and then printing the photos in the darkroom, slows things down and makes you appreciate the work you have done even more. Photography class taught me to always look at the world as if it were in a frame and see how the most ordinary things can become beautiful. These are a few of my favorite shots, taken with a fashion design theme.
As I have mentioned before, I love getting the chance to mix my interests together, so a lot of my subject matter was related to fashion. The above photo was one of my favorites. The dress forms have a sort of aerie effect (both in the photo and sometimes when you walked into an empty room in the studio), surrounding my dear friend as we worked on our Senior Collections. I took a small series of photos documenting some of our progress, one of which I framed and hung up in my room.
For the final photography project, everyone in the class was allowed to choose their subject and theme. Naturally, I went for a fashion shoot, bringing some whimsical patterns into natural settings. I styled a few of my friends and went on adventures in some very beautiful spots. Close to my college was a picturesque area of the Wissahickon Trail and Fairmount Park. Right down the street from my apartment was another nice park, where the trees were so pretty in full bloom. It was a wonderful photography experience and it was great being able to share it with some of my amazing friends!
As always, thanks for reading!
